Visual design concept
Writer’s Café hired me to create their visual identity for the cafe which is built on the theme of books and aims at delivering a delightful gastronomical experience to the customers. The cafe lets the customers get transformed into an oasis of delightful treats surrounded by a melange of books.
I went for an illustrative approach, inspired from the artworks of an American caricaturist and comics artist, Mort Drucker, where I came up with a creative direction of illustrating famous writers and authors in a caricature form. These were first hand sketched and then vectorised, bringing in the element of pen and paper that is relatable with the terms writers and books as well. I conceptualised keeping the brand name and their unique selling point, the books, which play a major role in the cafe’s user experience.
The Illustration
With the caricature approach of characters, I also included the sketch of the cafe’s front elevation (the main branch store), few elements of the interiors, and sketched a composition in such a way that the writers and authors are present in the cafe.
Keeping in mind the books in general, which are colourful mostly on the covers and monochrome on the inside, I went for the classic black and white illustration theme which would bring in a subtle correlation with the inner pages of the book and the food could act as an analogy to the book covers. Going black and white on all collaterals and visual identities was a conscious decision made over an in-depth discussion with the stakeholders placing the user experience as the primary focus.
Deliverables
The illustration created was made use not just onto the deliverables but also on the interiors as a part of cafe’s interior styling. Till date, the cafe has its branches at Chennai and Bangalore. At every branch the illustration is being made use in forms of posters, wallpapers, kiosk prints, and even on the takeaway materials which altogether made the illustration a vital part of their brand’s identity.
